[Exclusive Interview]: Ellen Krauss Releases New Single "Bali" and Talks Finding Peace Today

Ellen Krauss is 19 years-old, is from Sweden, is spirited, and is talented. The singer-songwriter has such power behind her vocals it’s sometimes hard to realize that she’s as young as she is. She’s a fresh-take on Ellie Goulding’s force, Tove Lo’s edge, and MØ’s energy. What I think differentiates her from her colleagues is her ability to make an electro-pop vibe without using the electro part. It’s this fresh, lively, raw expression of music that is so simple, but honestly refreshing to find in a generation where most music is heavily produced with synths and other technologies.

Since the start of her career back in 2019, she’s released several singles and an EP, and an upcoming debut album is on the way for 2020. She describes her music’s essence as a form of therapy and much like her “diary dressed up in music”.

Krauss recently released her new single “Bali”, which in my opinion, is one of her best singles. It’s a powerful and free down-tempo piece, and when you hear it, you can’t help but sway with it. In a way, it’s as if your heart is shouting your emotions while your mind’s at ease. You feel like you’re on a tropical island at the same time as experiencing the sensations of the hustle and bustle of a city. “If looks could kill then I’ve died a couple times, like all the time…” Krauss sings on the track, thus representing the clever, convivial songwriting she possesses in her music. You can listen to the song above now and you can read out interview together below!

Here is Our Interview:

Neelu Mohaghegh [NM]: How did you get started in music and why music?

Ellen Krauss [EK]: I started out by posting original songs on SoundCloud, but before that I mostly wrote music at home and sang a lot in school. I got discovered by a renowned Swedish producer called Christian Walz. He had heard a song I’d written on SoundCloud and reached out and invited me to his studio. That was about three years ago and we’ve been working together ever since. Posting that song and meeting with my team really made my music career take flight.

[EK]: Why music? I don’t know. Some people paint, some people wrestle. Music is my way of expressing myself.

[NM]: How would you describe yourself using 1 word or phrase?

[EK]: “Curious.”

[NM]: While in quarantine, is there anything you feel like you’ve learned so far?

[EK]: Well, I live in Sweden and our situation is very different from the rest of the world. We haven’t really been in quarantine. Many of us are just working from home really. I feel like I’ve learned that ironing clothes is quite nice. It’s peaceful. Also, I’ve cleaned out and thrown away a lot of shit.

[NM]: How have you continued to be creative during this time?

[EK]: Since I haven’t been forced to stay in, I’ve still been able to fill my days with fun stuff. People and places that inspire me which have then let me be creative.
