Exclusive Channel Sounds Interview with Amy Cohen on Being Dynamic, Using Your Platform, and Creating Music
Introducing 24 year-old rising pop artist, Amy Cohen. Cohen has always used music as her means of connecting with the world and herself. Originally from Massachusetts, the singer-songwriter took her passion for telling her truth and her love for the craft to California where she continues to write and produce new music with amazing producers. The artist has currently six tracks on Spotify and in the summer of 2019 she released her first EP Direction.
With honest lyrics and a seductive tone to her voice, her warm, hypnotic, and caressing music draws you in and has you immediately at a state of ease. In her music you can hear a beautiful combination of strength and serenity, and you can tell she has a certain level of control to her sound that is pertinent in the and pop spaces. Imagine if Kehlani and Maren Morris had a baby, the lovechild could be Cohen’s music. The best definition of her music’s essence is that it touches on relatable topics such as growing pains, personal change, and hopeless romanticism. To be an artist, a lyricist, and a musician, you have to have a different perspective than others—an eye for the beauty in really everything of life—even in the darker phases. Cohen certainly does just that, and using music as her medium, she offers that understanding to others through her balladic narratives. We’re excited to have had the chance to speak with the Cohen for Channel Sounds and DETOUR today to discuss projects she’s been working on lately and other forms of creativity.

Channel Sounds [CS]: What music projects do you have in the works that you’re super excited for? And what inspired them?
Amy Cohen [AC]: “Working on my second EP and I’m super pumped for it! Also been keeping busy with writing sessions. Real life experiences always inspire my writing. These upcoming projects are all about love, outgrowing, and putting yourself first.”
[CS]: How do you think artists should use their creative platforms to speak to the communities around them?
[AC]: “I don’t think artists should necessarily feel obligated to do so, but I personally feel most connected to and respect the artists that do. I’ve always felt that if you have a platform you hold some responsibility to effect change.”
[CS]: How has music fueled your ability to channel your self-expression?
[AC]: “Music is everything to me! It’s how I process every single emotion. I’ve expressed myself through songwriting for as long as I can remember. It’s how I make sense of the world.”
[CS]: How have you navigated your creativity through quarantine?
[AC]: “Quarantine has actually given me 10x the amount of time and space to be creative. With all of the hustle and bustle of normal life gone, I have the ability to sit, think, feel, process and write.”
[CS]: What is your detour? (what's something about you that you do outside of music? Could be a fun fact, a hobby, a passion project, etc.)
[AC]: “I actually do brand partnerships for the Grammys! I love that side of the industry as well.
[CS]: In one word, how would you describe yourself?
[AC]: “Dynamic.”
