[Exclusive Interview] WEATHERS on Lonely Vampires, New Music, & More (+ LA Show Review From Tour!)

Lonely Vampires

The LA-based alternative rock band has been hard at work performing and writing music, and overall doing the rock thing the right way. Consisting of frontman Cameron Boyer, guitarist Cameron Olsen, Bassist Brennen Bates, and drummer Cole Carson, the 4 have been creating feel-good, whimsical tracks that touch upon self-worth, self-discovery, and moving on in life. Without a doubt, the guys were able to find and define their sound, creating a unique and exciting path for their musical careers. Everyone of their songs tell a story that is all too familiar to our own experiences in life, making their connections with fans that much stronger. They released their first album in 2018 titled Kids In The Night, and have recently released a new single called “Lonely Vampire,” which is a fun, exhilarating track that has you dancing and jumping all over the place. It’s the kind of song that is not only perfect for the season, but is also perfect in its lyricism and light-heartedness. In a generation where a lot of music sounds the same and people are socializing through social media, Weathers is bringing material that is a breath of fresh air and have more meaning to the words than most of the typical love songs.

The band has been recognized as one of the most hardworking bands this year, earlier releasing their singles "Dirty Money" and Problems.” You can watch the music video for “Problems” here. This track in particular has also been earning spins at radio stations across the country. In the past, the band has toured with Magic Giant, Palaye Royale, and One Ok Rock as well as has hit the festival circuit, with appearances at Firefly, Summerfest, Rocklahoma, Wonderbus, and more.

“Lonely Vampire” touches upon the topic of social anxiety in a chaotic world, which is all too real of a situation that we face today and that’s what makes it more meaningful to hear expressed in song form. “Lonely Vampire” starts off with a vampiric, haunted mansion organ interlude and then flows into an upbeat, fast-tempo record, that has you singing along to its catchy, 80’s-like tune. It’s an easy song too sing along to, for all ages, it’s reminiscent of a classic brit-pop band track, and it’s got a happy melody for a topic about being socially awkward. In fact, it almost places you in a trance that makes you hypnotically happy, exerting all of your energy into the fact that, yes, you are awkward, and you’re proud of it. It’s a celebration of being yourself.

“Does anybody else here, feel like a freak?”, sings Boyer at the beginning, gradually leading to the loud triumphant belting of the lyrics, “Lonely Vampire, and I can’t change… I’m a vampire, so out of place, but I’m trying to be cool for one night…”

The band is now on a US tour with Badflower, making stops all across the country. See tour dates below, and be sure to catch them while they’re in town.

I had a chance to chat with these lonely vampires to hear more about their music and who they are as a band, and I had the opportunity to attend their LA show at the El Rey Theatre while they’re on tour and photograph them. The show was incredible, leaving me with post-concert depression. The crowd was so receptive and responsive to their charisma on stage. Boyer was jumping all around, non-stop, while the rest of the band poured their hearts into the instrumentation. The songs were performed even better than they were recorded, filling the space of the venue with so much life. The crowd danced and sang along as if Weathers was the actually headliner of the tour, and honestly, after that night, I’m pretty sure they made many more loyal fans. Some true fans had even driven 6 hours just to see them at the El Rey!

Read below for our interview and to see some of the photos I was able to capture.

What got you guys started in music?

Music was a way for us to take control of our own creative desires.  When I (Cameron Boyer) was growing up, being a part of different music groups I never quite felt in control of what I wanted to accomplish, it felt forced, Weathers feels natural.

Why did you guys decide to write “Lonely Vampire”?

Lonely Vampire is about social anxiety, which many of us deal with on a daily basis. Being in a band you have no choice to be social, to interact and as much as we love meeting our fans, there's still that sense of egg shells under our feet. "Million side eyes following me..." captures exactly that, especially in this environment of social media. But the song isn't just for us, it's for every person that feels like that ant under the magnifying glass.

How much has your music evolved since the time you guys first started making music together and how do you foresee it continuing to change or grow?

Writing music is always gonna be a reflection of where we are at life at that point in time. Happy Pills and I don't Wanna Know we were in that super awkward, almost dark persona of being teenagers in LA. Kid's In The Night was our blossoming from that, we've shredded all of that bullshit and decided that we were just gonna enjoy the ride and make a record that sounds like a "bop". Of course there's elements of sorrow in there (Night is Calling, Secrets Safe With Me) but 1983 which seems to be a fan favorite is about that classic car ride in your favorite ride, which happens to be a 1983 Benz for me. But of course, the record has to be about telling everyone, anyone who listens, that's it's okay not to be okay.  In fact, it's fucking great not to be okay. Embrace it, let it define you, let that become your statement. The future... you'll know soon enough.

You guys mention that in “simplest terms, 'Lonely Vampire' is about being socially awkward. I think that many people out there have had these moments of feeling weird or out of place at parties or other kinds of events. All of the expectations from other people on what you should wear, what you should be doing, or how you should be feeling can become really difficult to deal with” — what made you guys want to write about this particular topic for the track?

Lonely Vampire is an open door to my inner feelings when I am out in public. I'm awkward, I'm shy, I'm soft spoken but I also want to meet fans, to interact. It's a recognition of that and putting it into song is how I relay that info.
